Florida bills would restrict state's nursing-home Ombudsman

Florida's Republican lawmakers have introduced more than a dozen bills that critics claim will "neuter" the long-term care ombudsman program.

The state Department of Elder Affairs has also notified Florida's 400 mostly volunteer ombudsmen, instructing them not to speak to the media without alerting a district manager about the conversation and detailing the questions asked.

Ontario to expand access to some drugs after cancer victim complaint

Ontario is expanding access to certain cancer drugs in the wake of a controversy sparked by a breast cancer patient who was denied a potentially life-saving treatment because her tumour was deemed too small.

Jill Anzarut, 35, ignited the firestorm after she publicly complained that the province refused to pay for Herceptin because her tumour was a half-centimetre in diameter. Only tumours larger than one centimetre qualify in Ontario.

Ontario Ombudsman to probe funding for drug after complaint

Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin says he will investigate the way the provincial Health Ministry approves funding for the drug Herceptin.

His announcement today comes after a woman was denied funding for the drug because her tumor was too small.

Health Minister Deb Matthews says she welcomes Marin's investigation and her department will co-operate with it.

Matthews says the health ministry and Cancer Care Ontario are looking into what can be done when patients have a condition that is not black and white.

New NHS complaint handling regulations passed by Welsh Assembly

The National Health Service (Concerns, Complaints and Redress Arrangements) (Wales) Regulations 2011 have been debated and passed by the National Assembly for Wales.

The regulations will set out the arrangements and duties that will apply to NHS organisations when investigating and handling complaints.

The regulations also introduce a new redress mechanism (this draws on powers set out in the NHS Redress (Wales) Measure 2008 - the first Measure ever to be passed by the National Assembly).
